oknai - a request from Slovenia

Sometime back in July I received an email from a nice fellow who went by the name of Janko Mandic and came from Slovenia. He tells me that he's a musician (stage name: oknai) and that he's just happened to come across my blog. Anyway, he loved my photos from La Palma, taken way back in March, and asked permission to use a couple on the artwork for his forthcoming album. Of course I gave the project my blessing and now, 3 months down the line, I have 4 pristine copies sitting next to me.

The guys who designed the pack have done a great job and really made my photo sing (no pun intended), here's some nice photos that i've stolen from http://www.djfood.org/

Did anyone else see the Lomography Groupon a while back? A £50 voucher to spend in store for £20... utter bargain! I spent mine yesterday morning down at the East London store on Commercial St, buying myself a 38mm Diana lens and an adapter that allows you to FIT IT TO A DSLR!!!! I know, mental right?

Well here's a product of my experimentations with it from yesterday afternoon. You get the nice, slightly soft focus and slightly weird chromatic abberations like with your usual Diana camera, which is great because sometimes i find that digital cameras are way too clean and crisp for my liking. You don't get any vignetting though, which I think is a shame because that's part of the charm of a lomo photo! So I added a bit in later to make it more "authentic".

I wish they'd bring back the Routemaster... It's such a classic

...St Paul's Cathedral apparently.

It's many things to many people... an historic artifact from the 1600's, a great example of the genuius of Sir Christopher Wren or the defiant symbol of a nation in the midst of war. For me, it's the way it's still a major, imposing figure on the London skyline nearly 400 years since it was first built and looks better than most of the buildings created since.

Still I'm getting lots of practice with my new camera! The exposure was a lot more balanced in this one which made post-processing a helluva lot easier. I've heard many times that the more you do in-camera, the better the end result and I think, compared to the shot form earlier in the week, this is a nice example of that.

So, I recently bought my very first DLSR (woop!) in preparation for my round the world trip later his year. I've been practising with it like mad, partly because there's a lot of tools and functions you just don't get with Diana's/Trips/iPhones, mainly because it's FUN!!

As well as being humbled by the power of it, I'm immensely impressed with just how easy it is to use and, coupled with CS5's new HDR function (i've heard it's not as good as photomatix or other 'specialist' HDR software but it seems good to me), i've managed to capture some beauties so far. To quote a well-known kids TV show... Here's one I made earlier:

Expect to be seeing a few more from me over the next few weeks.

Morning everyone, amongst all the rubbish rainy weather this week one ray of sunshine has managed to fight through. His name is Barry McGee and he's currently got an exhibition on at the Stuart Shave Modern Art Gallery on Eastcastle St (nearest tube Oxford Circus).

Full of hand painted bearded characters amongst geometric patterns it's quite a surreal and trippy experience. Get right up close to the pics and your mind starts to warp... in a good way of course.

Obviously not one to be confined to canvas, Mr McGhee has applied himself to all kinds... wood, glass, bodyboards (!) you name it.

Currently showing at the Design Museum is a brilliant retrospective on the incredible career of Dutch design legend Mr Wim Crouwel.

It full of awesome posters, brilliant ideas and thought provoking insights into how and why his work has been so influential over the years.

It's highly inspiring stuff and I definitely recommend checking it out, but you'll have to be quick as it's only on for a few more weeks!

When it was first built i couldn't believe anyone could sanction such a concrete disaster as the new Shoreditch section of the London Overground. It's big, ugly, cumbersome and unimaginative. I still hate it but sometimes you've got to work hard to find the connection that allows yourself to overcome a hatred.

So I decided to grab my camera and get snapping, again with J G Ballard's landscapes in mind, to find something positive for me to hold on to.

La Palma

I've just got back from a nice relaxing 10 days in La Palma with my girlfriend and I must say, I don't think I've ever been anywhere so beautiful. Seriously striking landscapes and a lot greener than the other Canary Islands. We had to get a plane to Tenerife and then a ferry on from there, so it took the best part of a day to get there but it was well worth it. It reminded me of a more populated and volcanic version of what I imagined Isla Nublar to be like when I was younger.
